Inside/Outside:
Disease, Grotesque Imagery, and Transformation

Inside/Outside: Disease, Grotesque Imagery, and Transformation is an illustrated text about disease, grotesque imagery, and transformation. It was created for the theoretical part of my masters degree at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and was overseen by Dr. Prof. Marc Rölli. The text and illustrations dive into the complex imagery of the grotesque and how I connected with it through the process of being diagnosed with a chronical disease.
It looks at the history of grotesque imagery, its connection to thresholds, why we might connect with it in certain moments of life, and much more. It suggests why the often destructive energy of the grotesque, might be regenerative and open doors to new possibilities. It is written from a personal perspective and the illustrations are my own.
